THERAPEUTIC GOODS & BIOTECHNOLOGY IN THE HUNTER
· Currently embryonic and not well associated
· Locality and proximity to Education & training but with a low existing local skills base (workers being imported into the area with insufficient local training interconnectivity)
· Skilled workers graduating from local University forced to move out of the area due to the lack of suitable local work (a constant brain drain)
· Local ideas lost to foreign developers (loss of Intellectual Capital) and consequent failure to train and maintain a skilled work force
· Most current producers of Therapeutic Goods and Biotechnology Products are Australian mid-sized businesses with common problems

THE HUNTER
· A growth area with land, an excellent and growing university, and a ready and skilled
workforce
· The Hunter Region is in transition still after the loss of the BHP steel works and more
closures recently announced
· Coal provides a current back bone to the regional economy but this is a dangerously
narrow focus for economic activity and hazardously exposes the region to the vagaries of
global markets
· There is substantial development intended for the Hunter Region in terms of available
Industrial land, proximity to existing and proposed infrastructure (roads, rail and airport)

BACKGROUND
· The Therapeutic Goods and Biotechnology sector is worth up to $4 billion in Australia
· The sector in NSW is beginning to become more organised with a lot of effort through
DSRD
· There is no foci as with other states such as Melbourne or Brisbane
· Melbourne has the BioMelbourne Cluster with 500 members
· There is no land or regional focus developed in Sydney despite 10 years of efforts
· Sydney is disconnected without any real networking between disconnected companies and
research teams
· Development within Therapeutic and Biotech clusters have proven success in bringing
large increases in investment and capital into a genuine region e.g. Western Ireland,
